We are Matured is as obsolete as Symbian OS!!!

I read somewhere that India is the most diverse place on earth after African Continent. I heard someone saying that India is the place to be. I was taught in social studies during my schooling that India is a perfect example of Unity in Diversity

But a recap of events in past two months, be it Delhi rape case, be it the rape-cases that followed it, be it the Indo-Pak relations, be it Viswaroopam issue, I believe that the three statements I wrote above were like the obsolete Symbian OS of Nokia. This brings in the question,

“How far have we matured as a society?”

Unfortunately, the answer would be a big  NO.

Why?

1. We agitate over trivial matters such as Viswaroopam.

Reason: Hurts a section of society. Then what’s the need of CBFC firstly? If a movie cleared from CBFC, can it be banned by State Govt? If it must be banned, then CBFC miserably failed. Else, there is some reason other than ‘sentiments’. What are they(read TN Govt) trying to make out here?

2. Indo Pak Relations

Reason: The second the Pakistan loses a match, we celebrate as if we have eradicated poverty from our country. The minute the media praises India for cornering Pakistan, we are overjoyed as if the corruption politicians are brought to justice. The hour the public comes to know Pakistan is in trouble from all diretions, we feel elated as if we have given back something good back to our society. One thing that should be kept in mind is that we our enemy does to us is partly, if not completely, the reflection of what we do to them. But it goes unreported here. You want a classic example, just walk on the streets of Manipur.

3. Delhi rape followed by Rape flood

Reason: Since a month or so, every rape is getting the much not needed media attention. It’s ok to let society know about the incident, but media focuses god damn things that shouldn’t be highlighted. Start highlighting about the delay of the judicial system, about the tolerance of police in handling such cases and about the way the victims are treated in their communities. I felt for a few days that every other male in our society is a god damn rapist, given the reportage of incidents.

Let us move on from a populist society to a more matured society. Let us have tolerance towards arts. Let us think rationally and not always patriotically. Let us empathize with rape survivors but make sure the culprits are brought to justice (read not hanged to death).

The follwoing lines by our Youth Icon, Motivator, Poet, Scientist and Ex-President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam need to be ‘religiously’ followed

Where there is righteousness in the heart
There is beauty in the character.
When there is beauty in the character,
there is harmony in the home.
When there is harmony in the home.
There is an order in the nation.
When there is order in the nation,
There is peace in the world.

In addition to calling India all those nice things- unity in diversity, best phase on earth etc – let’s not forget that this is also a country of bhed-chaal. We are like sheep. We just follow whoever points us towards anything shiny. Corruption or rape or Pakistan, you name it.

Very catchy title for the post, by the way!

    Hey Sunil,

@Vishwaroopam – When it comes to law and order, the state govt has all rights to ban a movie irrespective of CBFC’s stance, it doesn’t mean that CBFC is toothless. Well was it right or wrong in this case is totally another discussion altogether.

@Indo-Pak – Its not just about cricket that has fed us this mentality, scores of Indian movies as well, so on the whole its the media and entertainment industry (Cricket lost its status as a game long ago, especially for a Ind-Pak match)

@Rape – Same comment as previous one, there is not morality and responsibility in the media on what to showcase and what not…!!!

    • Thanks for the reply Charan.
@Vishwaroopam – As per the law of the land, CBFC would give a certificate and allow release of a movie only if the movie deems fit and doesn’t cause law and order problems. Hence either CBFC people are deaf & blind or the Govt of TN had some other motive behind the ban. Also the CBFC and the movies it deals falls under central jurisdiction.
